Parkadal (The Milky Ocean) is a contemporary parody on the old Hindu creation myth of the churning of the ocean by the gods and the asuras. The play explores how our search for identity links up with global themes of exploitation of power and natural wealth—and the effects of this exploitation on mankind and the earth. What would emerge when we would churn the waters of the ocean today? Why haven’t we learned, after so many (re-)creations of the earth, to share things equally? Through its combined use of a traditional and a novel medium, the play opens up suggestive layers of local and global events that threaten peace and the existence of the earth and mankind.
